Many parents go out of their way to accommodate their kids’ sports endeavors. One Maryland dad even put his own grand spin on the idea: He ripped up the family’s front yard in the mid-1990s and slowly transformed it into a regulation-size baseball field.
By the time Jim Scardina was done, he had not only built a world-class private baseball field, but also dugouts, bleachers, a concession stand with a bathroom and utility storage, infield irrigation—and a $100,000, 6,300-square-foot indoor baseball training facility, according to a 2008 profile in the Washington Post.
Jim’s son, Joe Scardina, ended up playing baseball from Little League through college.
Joe's friends grew up playing baseball at his house, and today, the field is home to the Rawlings A's Prospects, an elite youth baseball program. The family also runs Scardina Baseball out of the training facility, which has two indoor batting cages and a workout area.
But all good things must come to an end, and the Scardinas are hanging up their cleats. The family’s unique 10-acre property in Millersville, MD, is now on the market for nearly $1.4 million.
They’re hoping another baseball-obsessed family can pick up where they left off—and opts not to bulldoze the field and turn it back into the front yard, listing agent Donale Bernarding says.
“We’ve marketed the property toward the baseball community, and people who do baseball training,” Bernarding says. “The ideal buyer is somebody who is going to use it commercially for that specific reason. It’s the ‘Field of Dreams.’”
And while this home’s unusual front yard grabs headlines, we’d be remiss if we didn’t note the property also includes a 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, five-bath, Georgian-style brick mansion filled with family-friendly features.
